A New Chapter (and Name!) for the Calgary Police Half Marathon

Happy Valentine’s Day Fam!

As we celebrate love today, I want to share some exciting news that comes from the heart of our organization, a love letter to the City of Calgary, if you will.

After last summer’s strategic session and a fortuitous phone call with Sergeant Steve Dowler (below with Run Calgary Operations Director, Jon Bird), followed by months of hard work, planning, and collaboration, I’m writing to you today with a mix of excitement and pride.

Run Calgary is embarking on something truly special, we’re taking over the planning and execution of one of Calgary’s most iconic and beloved races—the Calgary Police Half Marathon—and giving it a fresh new look and feel, while working alongside Calgary Police Service to honour its 45-year legacy. 

Meet the Calgary Police Classic

A new logo with a fresh fall look, a classic feel, and a nod to the ‘running person’ who has been a mainstay in the logo for 45 years.

This new name symbolizes a new chapter for the race, one where we’re bringing together the best of what has made this event special, while introducing fresh elements designed to make your race day experience even better – leading with the announcement that the Calgary Police Classic is now a road race!

Deepening Our Impact in the Community

Run Calgary has been championing running in the community for over 60 years. We’ve always focused on providing people of all ages and abilities with the chance to experience the joy and empowerment that running brings through our events of all sizes. Taking on the Calgary Police Classic feels like the perfect next step in deepening our impact in this amazing city and providing runners with a beautiful, well-organized, local, fall road race.

This decision was not made lightly, for it also means we are letting go of some of our smaller pathway events. We have loved collaborating with beloved Calgary institutions on cause-based community runs and we will continue to give back to their charities through the Charity Challenge and by incorporating fun local partnerships into our larger road races.

Our team is energized to work with CPS and evolve an existing race, building on over 4 decades of tradition, which has always stood for so much more than just miles run. It’s about coming together, supporting one another, and raising important funds that make our community better. As we take over the helm of planning, we’re committed to continuing that legacy while adding some exciting new twists to make it even more special – we’ve secured a new venue (Cowboys Park), introduced an 8 km, added a Kids Race for the first time, brought on new local partners and added some sweet signature swag at check out: aviators anyone?

I have had the privilege of working closely with CPS since joining this organization in 2012. We couldn’t execute our annual marathon event without the 100+ officers who assist in closing roads, detouring traffic and caring for our participants each year.

Saturday, September 20, 2025: A Year of Celebration

This year marks the 45th running of the Calgary Police Half Marathon, and we’re determined to make it one for the books. Not only are we keeping the heart and soul of this event intact with the Hawks Helicopter flyover, First Responder Challenge and Jason Bramham Spirit Award, but we’ll also be adding some brand new bells and whistles (tact team and on-course Police and Fire cheer stations) that are sure to elevate the experience for every single participant.

The Calgary Police Service members, who have generously donated their time to organize this event since its inception, will continue to be involved in creating some pretty memorable moments, exceptional energy, and flair that only our wonderful first responders can deliver. 

One of the most exciting updates is the addition of a new venue and road race format. We’re moving the race from MRU to start and finish at Cowboys Park (formerly known as Shaw Millennium Park), where runners will be able to enjoy an urban, flat and fast course on the road that is scenic and has lots of room for finish line fun. From the epic new start, expect views that will leave you feeling energized and inspired and a donut party when you cross a very unique finish line.

$20 Youth Registration: Running for the Next Generation

We’re also thrilled to introduce a brand-new Kids Race this year! Our goal has always been to inspire people of all ages to get moving and be part of the running community, and this new addition is all about giving the next generation a chance to experience the joy of crossing the finish line and running alongside the heroes of our community. Whether your little one is running their first race, or has a few under their belt, we can’t wait to see their excitement and energy on race day.

Just like other in-person Run Calgary events, there is a flat fee of $20 (not including taxes or fees) for all youth 18 and under to participate. This is just one way that Run Calgary is committed to getting kids moving.

Why You Should Run (or Walk) It

Here’s the deal. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a first-timer, this race offers something for everyone. The course is flat and fast and provides breathtaking views of the Bow River and downtown Calgary. You don’t need to leave the city, pay for travel, parking and hotel, instead you can sleep in your own bed, and maximize any travel time for connection and celebration instead. With the new venue, you’ll have a chance to experience our city in a whole new way. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to challenge yourself, train for your fall marathon, support the community, and make a difference—all while having an amazing time right here in our very own backyard!

From music, to cheering stations, to post-race celebrations, this year’s event is designed to be as much about fun and community as it is about the race itself.
