Race Weekend For Everyone
Accessibility for Adaptive Athletes
From information about the use of mobility devices and guides, to service dogs and race day tips, it's all here!
ADAPTIVE ATHLETE RESOURCES
Devices that are allowed:
- Handcycles are allowed recreationally in the 5 km and 10 km distances ONLY. Handcycles can not participate competitively and are not allowed in the 21.1 km or 42.2 km distances. Our course routes are not bike courses and the safety of all participants is paramount! Helmets are encouraged, but not required, for handcyclists.
- Racing wheelchairs are allowed in all distances. Racing wheelchairs will have their own results category and will have a 1 minute silent start before runners for each distance.
- Wheelchairs, walkers, Joelettes, Alinkers, canes/walking poles, and motorized scooters/wheelchairs required for mobility are allowed. Definitions for each type of device can be found in the section below titled "Adaptive Device Definitions".
- If you have any questions about the use of a specific mobility device that is not listed, please email info@calgarymarathon.com!
If you are participating in any event using a mobility device of any kind:
- Register as a participant who will be using a mobility device (it’s a mandatory question when you register) by May 1.
- You will be contacted by Servus Calgary Marathon staff prior to the event to confirm your mobility device. We will place you in a wave that is safe for you and other participants and review the rules for participation.
- Please plan to arrive at the start line 60 mins before your race distance starts to check all equipment and listen to any last minute instructions.
- All racing wheelchairs will have a 1 min silent start before the runners.
- All handcycles (recreational only!) will start in the last corral for the 5 km and 10 km race.
- All other mobility devices will start in the last corral.
Some things to remember:
- Anyone trying to enter chutes using a handcycle without the appropriate approvals will be removed from the course.
- Participants are not allowed to pass any emergency vehicles, doing so will result in immediate disqualification and you will no longer be allowed to participate in future events.
- We suggest participants stay as far right as safely possible to allow others to pass.
- Participants will obey and listen to all directions given on course by lead bikes.
- Roads are closed on a rolling time schedule, as such all intersections must be approached with caution and you may be required to stop.

Run Calgary can provide resources to participants with visual impairments or other cognitive challenges that require a guide for the event.
Registration
- When you are in the process of registering for the race, you will be asked if you require specific accommodations. Please select "yes". The next question will prompt you to list any accommodations that are needed on race weekend. Here you can indicate that you will need a guide or support person to race with you.
- A Calgary Marathon staff member will reach out to you prior to the event to coordinate the use of a guide. If you do not have one already selected, we can assist with finding a guide for you.
- Once your guide is selected, you will be given a code that your guide can use to register for a Green Bib race registration. Your guide must be registered in order to participate in the event. If your guide had already registered prior to being selected as your guide, we won't be able to provide a refund or deferral (view our refund policies here), but they will be able to proceed as your guide.
Package Pick-up
- The participant (or someone on their behalf) can pick up their race kit (bib and shirt if applicable) at regular Package Pick-up
